Contouring

April 22, 2008

As we age, collagen and elastin fibers which make up the dermis become compromised, resulting in a loss of elasticity and a gradual loosening of the skin.  The skin literally loses its shape, as evidenced by wrinkles and sagging.  For many, these changes first become evident after weight loss or pregnancy, when diet and exercise do not return the skin to its previous state.  For others, issues with skin texture pre-date dramatic body changes, as in the case of “love handles” and cellulite.  Time also contributes to changes in skin tone, which can be especially visible in the face.

If you no longer recognize the face looking back at you in the mirror, it’s time to learn how Thermage can help you look as young as you feel.

Thermage is a safe, clinically proven way to tighten and contour skin, with improvements in tone, contour, and texture occurring naturally through the stimulation of your own collagen. Thermage is completely non-invasive: no surgery, no injections. A single treatment tightens your existing collagen and stimulates new collagen growth. Improvements are both immediately visible and continue up to six months. Results can last for years depending on your skin condition and aging process.

Thermage treatments at Kalologie include:

The procedure itself is normally done as a single treatment that takes from 20 minutes to two hours depending on the treatment area. What’s more, there is no downtime, so you can quickly resume your normal routine. Unlike lasers, Thermage works on all skin types and tones. And unlike injections or fillers, Thermage works on your entire face: forehead, eyes, nasolabial folds, jaw line, jowls and the area under your chin.

Thermage is the only non-invasive procedure available that tightens and renews your skin’s collagen in all three layers. How? Thermage’s unique Capacitive Radiofrequency (CRF) technology safely heats your skin’s underlayer and the web of collagen in the inner layer, causing an immediate tightening as well as improved tone and texture. And the improvements will continue and become even more noticeable for four to six months following treatment due to new collagen growth.

Acne

April 9, 2008

Though many people associate acne with the challenges of youth, recent years have shown a trend toward more adults confronting acne-prone skin. Many influences including hormones, diet, and environment can negatively affect the skin’s health and clarity. Unfortunately, the anxiety commonly associated with blemishes can lead to extreme measures, resulting in over-processed, frustrated skin.

Essential to finding any solution is defining the problem, and all too often breakouts and acne are treated as though they are the same. Acne is a condition of varying levels with a wide range of treatment options. Breakouts are relatively circumstantial and temporary and can be experienced with normal skin. Imperative to remedying either situation is a balanced product and treatment approach.

Products
Whether breakouts or chronic acne, it is important to recognize the value of using a proper combination of products. A carefully chosen system is essential to balancing the skin, and the two most change-inducing products are exfoliant (retinoids or acids) and cleansers.

Dryness

April 9, 2008

Skin’s natural moisture factor is its primary defense against the elements. Dry or dehydrated skin is usually sensitive; having minimal or depleted moisture resources, and tends to be fragile, with surface tissue and underlying structures prone to injury. Chronic tightness and chafing are common complaints of people with dry skin.

Treatments
Key to caring for dry skin is measured exfoliation. Strategic removal of dry surface cells, allows for improved penetration of moisturizers and nutrients. In keeping with this, the following treatments are easily customized to cater to dry skin:

Custom Kalologie Facial

Deluxe Kalologie Facial

Enzyme Peel

Products
There are three product types pivotal to the care of dry skin: gentle exfoliants, balanced moisturizers, and mild pH balanced cleansers free of sulfates and irritating preservatives. Our dry clients like:

Pigmentation

Pigmentation

Contrary to popular belief, discoloration is the first sign that our skin is aging. Remembering that age equals experience, each freckle, dark patch or sun spot is evidence of the skin’s experiences. Environmental exposure, hormonal changes and acne scarring are common causes of cell damage. Damaged cells have an impaired ability to replicate, often changing color. It can take many years for the cumulative damage to become evident, but when it does, it is frequently in the form of clustered, darkened cells, known as hyperpigmentation. Depending on the underlying source of the pigmentation, treatment options vary.

Products
There are three product types essential to battling hyperpigmentation: exfoliants (retinoids or acids), antioxidants, and sunscreen. Our clients with discoloration prefer:

Antioxidants

Sensitivity

April 9, 2008

Sensitivity

“Sensitive” is one of the most common words people use to describe their skin. When asked to elaborate, people describe a wide range of different sensitivity experiences ranging from generalized inflammatory responses like burning, itching and rashiness to chronic or seasonal dryness. Conditions like rosacea are commonly included in this category, as well as allergy-prone skin. Whenever skin is sensitive it may mean that there is some weakness in the skin’s defenses. This weakness can be natural, as with naturally dry skin, or acquired, as with the case of rosacea, eczema, or an allergic response. In all cases, it is important to determine the cause of sensitivity and to avoid over-processing the skin.

Another important consideration is the frequency with which dryness and sensitivity co-exist. Though both may exist independently, they frequently occur at the same time. The skin’s primary defense is its natural moisture factor, which functions to keep skin moist and pliant. Since dry skin does not have this first line of defense, it is more susceptible to both irritation and injury, and as a result tends to be more sensitive.

Products
Clients with sensitive skin should adopt a “less is more” philosophy about their skin care. Excessive product use can cause reactions in the skin and make it difficult to isolate the source of the reaction. Two products essential to treating sensitive skin are mild, pH-balanced cleansers free of sulfates and irritating preservatives and balancing moisturizers which enhance the skin’s ability to protect itself. A gentle exfoliating serum may be used with minimally sensitive skin; and appropriate exfoliation will enhance the penetration of topical moisturizers and nutrients.
