About Face

Our skincare specialists dispel these seven sinful winter makeup myths.

MYTH #1
It’s OK to skip on sunscreen.
“Sunscreen is the number one anti-aging product available,” says Kalologie Skincare founder, Tracy Brennan. “Most people only look at the SPF, but most important are the ingredients.” Brennan says to look for sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide for the absolute best protection. She recommends ColorScience’s Sunforgettable SPF 45 powdered sunscreen in Almost Clear.

MYTH #2
Moisturizer makes your skin look greasy.
“If you skip moisturizing, your skin can become over-dry and produce more oil,” Brennan warns. “By using a lightweight moisturizer regularly, it will keep skin balanced and promote a healthy glow.”

MYTH #3
Toothpaste makes pimples go away.
Brennan says the best pimple-fighting ingredients are benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and sulfer. Look for treatments that contain these ingredients instead and your skin will look picture perfect in no time.

MYTH #4
You can use regular hand lotion on your face.
“The main issue with hand lotion is the use of mineral oil, which can really clog pores and cause breakouts. You may save a little money in the short run, but you will only cause long-term problems,” Brennan says.

MYTH #5
Cleaning your makeup brushes and sponges all the time isn’t necessary.
“Bacteria can grow on makeup brushes and especially sponges,” Brennan says. “But you can quickly avoid bacteria build-up by swishing your brushes in soap once a week.”

MYTH #6
You should buy a darker-hued foundation right now because you’ll tan in the summer, anyway.
“Always match your actual complexion as closely as possible to avoid a ‘mask-like’ appearance,” Brennan cautions, but she says you can always add a few drops of bronzer in the summer for a little glow.

MYTH #7
Piling on layers of foundation, concealer and powder will cover up all your blemishes.
Use as little product as possible for natural coverage. Says Brennan, “too much product can actually draw more attention to the blemish, which is exactly the opposite effect you want.”
